Maija Louekari is a Finnish designer and illustrator who is most known for her work with Marimekko. She managed her first big break-through with the design of the Hetkiä pattern that reflects life in Helsingsfors. The pattern was entered as part of a competition for young designers in 2003 and was taken into production by Marimekko shortly after. Since then she has been collaborating extensively with the Finnish brand and has designed many more collections, including the popular Siirtolapuutarha, Räsymatto, Kulkue and Kaiko patterns.
Maija studied at the University of Art and Design in Helsingfors as well as Denmark’s Design school. She designs patterns for both porcelain and textile, always with bold colors and playful designs. She takes her inspiration from her everyday life, the people around her, the landscape as well as stories and sagas from her childhood. These of course include Pippi Longstocking – one of Maija’s biggest icons.
