Marianne Westman

Marianne Westman has created some of the most popular porcelain ranges in Sweden. It’s no surprise that she is often referred to as the “porcelain mother of Sweden”.

After Marianne Westman’s completion of her studies of ceramics and glass at the University Academy of Arts, Crafts and Design, Westman was chosen to work at Rörstrand. She was reluctant, as she wanted to open her own shop outside of her hometown Falun, Sweden. Starting out she was unhappy at Rörstrand, as her ideas were often questioned or dismissed. Her breakthrough was the launch of her Mon Amie range in 1952. The idea for the blue floral pattern came to her on a rainy midsummer’s day. Other popular designs by Marianne Westman include Picknick, Pomona and Frisco. Her designs are unique, playful and often detail fruits and vegetables. This is also why many 1960s tableware was wrongly attributed to Marianne Westman. An example of this is the Eden range that was in fact designed by Sigrid Richter.

Westman spent most of her career working for Rörstrand, but also collaborated with Skrufs glasbruk, Westmans Textilateljé and Almedahls.
