What is a paraffin lamp?

Paraffin lamps, also known in some countries as kerosene lamps or oil lamps, are a kind of oil lamp that use paraffin lamp oil as the fuel. Liquid paraffin is a refined kerosene that works better for indoor use due to the less noticeable smell.

Paraffin lamps are beautiful decorative accessories that add a lot of character to your home. They do not need electricity, which makes them practical to use in the event of sudden electrical power outages. As they are portable, they are easy to move around your home to where they are needed at the time.

How to use a paraffin lamp

To use your paraffin lamp, you can follow these steps:

  • Unscrew the burner and carefully remove the glass cover of the lamp.
  • Pour the paraffin oil so that it fills about three quarters of the lamp container.
  • Screw on the burner and let the wick absorb the fuel. You will need to wait around 30 minutes to one hour for it to absorb entirely. You should read the product specifications to know for exactly how long it should be soaked.
  • Light your paraffin lamp with a match or lighter.
  • Adjust the size of the flame using the knob turner.
  • Place the oil lamp glass cover back onto the burner.

How to turn off a paraffin lamp

When you would like to turn off your paraffin lamp, turn the wick down and cup your hands at the top of the glass shade and blow swiftly. Keep in mind that the glass shade of the lamp can be very hot.

Care and maintenance for your oil lamp

To keep your oil lamp in good condition, it is important that you clean and maintain it in the correct way. Make sure that there is always lamp oil in your lamp to prevent the wick from drying out. Trim the wick regularly by cutting it when it has cooled. Wash the glass cover by hand if it has turned black from soot stains. If the wick has dried out and needs to be replaced, you can easily buy a new wick for your oil lamp.

Where can you use an oil lamp burner?

Oil lamps can come in both indoor and outdoor versions so it is important to check the product specifications to know where it is suitable to use.

If you are looking for outdoor oil lamps, then brands such as Holmegaard and Stelton offer a range of garden lamps in stylish designs that will look beautiful in your home exteriors.

For indoor use, KLONG has a selection of elegant table oil lamps that will light the room with a beautiful glow.

Safety tip: Always place your oil lamp on a level surface and never leave it unattended.
