THE BEST WAY TO CLEAN A CAST IRON FRYING PAN

When a cast iron frying pan is seasoned properly with cooking oil, which forms a protective layer, it is very important that you only clean it with hot water and a dish brush - no detergent. A cast iron pan must therefore not be washed in a dishwasher, but you can use steel wool or a wire brush to clean it with if you have stains that cannot be removed with water only.

To season (or re-season) your cast iron frying pan:

  1. Wash your cast iron pan with detergent this time to get a completely clean surface. It is important that the pan is completely dry before the next step so place it on the hob if necessary.
  2. Once the pan is dry rub the entire pan including the handle with cooking oil (pick something with a high smoke point) and place in the oven for an hour at around 230 °C.
  3. Allow the cast iron pan to cool down in the oven. You will know when the pan is correctly seasoned because it will have a dark glossy finish that is not sticky nor greasy. If you find food is sticking to the pan then repeat the seasoning process again.
