Byon is a Swedish brand that has been gaining ground in the design sphere in recent years. With its playful use of colour and shapes and products that constantly surprise, it has become a brand that catches our attention with every new collection. Here is a brand that thinks outside the box and with its many influences has created its own universe, filled with the joy of colour and exciting forms, where everyone is welcome.
- ‘We usually say that Byon is an “international brand from Sweden”, many people talk about Scandinavian design and we love that, but we think it's great to bring in the southern European feeling in colour and shape,’ says Beatrice Lindgren, Creative Director.
- ‘The vision has always been the same, to do what no one else does with colour, playfulness and unexpected products,’ explains Beatrice, who describes with great passion the brand's journey from a small wholesale company to a thriving design brand with customers all over the world.
Beatrice Lindgren, Creative Director for Byon.
Well-known in design circles for their statement pieces, Byon has succeeded in attracting a greate deal of attention with each new collection release. With unique products that offer unexpected details, new colour combinations and tactile materials Byon's products never fail to get tongues wagging. But their breakthrough piece? Their story starts with a controversial Cheetah vase.
"The Cheetah vase was the breakthrough for Byon, it generated an immediate reaction and colleagues thought it was a bit of a joke," says Beatrice, laughing.
"We went for it anyway, and I'd say it was the starting point of our brand journey and the successes that have followed," Beatrice continues.
"Since then, the vase has been followed by several successes such as the Pompom cushion, the Calore lanterns and the Shell series."
For Byon, it's important that your home feels like you, that it reflects the personalities that live there and what they like - and it's through the details that one gets to tell that story. Statement pieces have become the brand's signature, and it's always exciting to see what wil become the next ‘cheetah’. Behind each collection and individual design is a dedicated team who put in an enormous amount of work that takes place in their own studio.
"We are a small but fantastic team that works closely together in our studio, we have chosen to work very independently, to find the common thread in what we want to do," explains Beatrice.
"For each new season, we always start by setting the colours. It's not always a completely new colour palette, and we always work with our iconic colours, which are cobalt ‘power blue’ and red, green and a neutral base consisting of white, beige and black, which appear on a lot of our products. For each new collection, we usually work with one, sometimes two collection colours that we strengthen a little extra and that are visible in materials from us," Beatrice continues.
"Another important part of our design process is to gather inspiration, as I myself come from the fashion industry, many of our products are inspired from there, both in terms of colours and shapes."
"A major source of inspiration for our products, one that I think many people can see, is taken from southern Europe and the architecture that exists in Italy, for example, we have candlesticks that are inspired by the Roman columns, there are shells and lemons, much of the inspiration I and my colleague Josefin Låstbom, Purchasing Manager, get through travel and there is a great passion behind everything we do."
"When it comes to statement pieces or ‘eye catchers’ as we call them, we usually release one or two per collection together with other new arrivals and our core assortment. But even if they are stand-out products, we always have an idea that these should be able to live on in the assortment."
"Same thing with the colours, if you buy a new product you can be sure that it can be combined with something from the previous collections."
In a home that feels like you, there should also be space for you to dare to challenge traditions, be bold and combine unexpected colours, bring in festive bouquets, no matter they occasion, go wild with quirky shapes and texutres. For Byon there is no wrong way to combine their pieces and through their products you should find joy and courage to give your home different expressions that bring emotions to life.
"We talk a lot about feeling that you are part of Byon's world, where every way is right and where you dare to step outside the box," explains Beatrice.
"I myself can become completely lyrical about new colour combinations I've never seen before, and I want you to feel there is no wrong way to work with colour; butter yellow and red is a magical combination for autumn," laughs Beatrice.
"Byon is very much about celebration in everyday life too, setting the table by investing in a lovely tablecloth and matching napkins. They can be washed in a washing machine so why only dress a table for weekends and parties?"
"Maximise the atmosphere by grouping several candlesticks, for example with the new Lara series, which is available in several sizes and colours." She says.
"Imagine you are in a restaurant when you set the table, include lots of bowls and small plates, your table setting immediately becomes a little more fun, just as restaurants today try to create a feeling of home", explains Beatrice. "Our new Kai dish, for example, which is shaped like a fish, adds character to the whole table with its little red cabbage feet, adding that extra another layer of fun to the table."
"Also, don't save the bouquet of flowers for Friday, buy a bouquet on Monday instead, that way you get to enjoy them all week instead." she finishes.
Corallo vase in butter yellow - eye catching in both colour & texture
Byon is the brand without rules, that gives us colours to fall in love with, details that catch our eyes and a home where everyday life turns into a celebration. With each new collection feels like Christmas morning, where curious fingers eagerly wait to open the parcels. Their collections are full of surprises and always with a guarantee of joy. So what's in store for this year's autumn collection and what upcoming trends is the brand talking about?
"We will offer a lot of “love and passion” because the collection theme for autumn is called “Fall in love with Byon,”’ says Beatrice with a smile.
"Above all, we see a lot of love and passion in the form of taking care of each other, but also that it's a bit about “power” which comes a lot through in the red we see in the collection. The colour red can be sweet, appearing in the shape of a heart, passionate in the heat, but also assert itself in the form of power, which we want to inspire.
"We also see a lot of coloured glass, like the Opacity series, which gives that slightly mystical feeling when you drink from coloured glasses," explains Beatrice.
"We're also offering glass art like the tactile Corallo vase where you can feel the structure and shape, it's hand-blown, very solid and heavy."
"We still believe in festivities, in inviting people to a party and everyday luxury."
"The collection is very much about celebrating each other, like a big hug," says Beatrice, laughing.
"When it comes to future trends, I say colour! It feels good to say that we may be a colourful brand, but I think it's fun that there continues to be a lot of colour."
"We also believe in unexpected shapes, contrasts in the form of matt and glossy, soft and hard," Beatrice continues.
"Then I think that the beige that has been around for a couple of years now will be replaced by grey, which will come back again. Maybe not in an entire home but rather in the form of accents."
"We also see symbols coming a lot, we have a lot of hearts in our upcoming collection, but I also see quotes, shells and symbols creeping up more and more, things that make us happy and give us warmth."
And the future of Byon, what can we expect?
"I think you can expect to see us being a bit more international, more in our element. I also think you will see even more colour, shape and unexpected objects, but above all you will see much more of us in every way," Beatrice concludes with a smile.
