1. Shooting star New Year's party decorations

New year should be glamorous affair and nothing screams glamour better than extravagant table decorations. Go all in with this New Year party idea and create a hovering cloud of balloons. We filled the balloons with helium but you could, of course, simply stick them to the ceiling.

Tie some paper stars to the balloons so they hang gracefully over the table like falling stars.

Keep the colour scheme simple with white and opaque balloons filled with confetti, add a touch of gold or bronze to keep an elegant but glamorous party feeling.

A simple colour scheme of bronze and rose gold gives this new year celebration a touch of glamour.

2. Go all out for your New Year's table setting

If there is any time of the year when you can really pull out all the stops it's New Year. The theme is up to you, keep it simple with white tableware with gold accents. For something more opulent, add playful elements such as feathers, stars and glitter. Or perhaps a New Year's party idea in silver instead? Opt for a table setting in varying shades of grey for an elevated party feeling!

3. Name tags & napkin folding

Personal name tags and neatly folded napkins put the finishing touches on any table setting. Here we have combined the Ripple champagne glasses with Bernadotte place card holder from Georg Jensen where the fluted element on each match the other perfectly.

4. A grand centrepiece for the table

If you wish to really wow your guests invest in a beautiful vase and an equally beautiful bouquet of flowers this New year.

For this New year party idea we have kept the colour tones simple with dark greens and grasses rather than lots of colourful flowers but who says you can't have cut flowers in the middle of winter?

5. Opulent oysters

These New year party ideas are all about luxury and that includes the food. Welcome your guests with a plate of fresh oysters to tickle their taste buds.

Now of course, we understand than not everyone enjoys fresh oysters so if you are looking for other ideas for your New year party menu then look no further. We have five delicious canape recipes for you here.

6. Welcome drinks for your New year party

Invite your guests in from the cold with a tasty welcome drink. Whether you offer a glass of champagne with a touch of festive sparkle or a delicious homemade cocktail is up to you.

7. New year party games

In Sweden it is traditional to play bingo in the lead up to the New Year countdown. Why not take a leaf out of our Nordic neighbour’s book and create your own game of bingo to be played throughout the night?

This game requires nothing more than your imagination, a few sheets of paper and perhaps a small gift to give to the winner!

8. A resolution bin

New year wouldn’t be new year if we didn’t make a resolution that we have no intention of keeping!

We love this New year party idea – put out some paper and pens and a handy little box and have each of your guests write down a resolution. You could even turn it into a game and pick resolutions for each other.

9. Create your own New year's photo-booth

This popular party idea works well for any occasion. Create a sign for the photobooth from a pinboard, we used the Design Letters board and matching letters. Fill a jar with your photobooth props, hang up some glittery bunting and voila – you have your very own photo-booth!

Create a photo corner and decorate it with lots of balloons!

10. Glittery New year bottles

On New Year's Eve, it's always okay to add a little extra sparkle - of course we're talking about glitter! Why not make your wine bottles part of your table decorations? Peel off the labels and decorate them with glitter for the evening. This festive DIY tip is the perfect way to set the table for New Year's Eve.

Instructions:

  • Soak the bottle in warm water for a little while before scrubbing the labels off with a small scouring pad and rapeseed oil. The rapeseed oil will help you remove even the last bits of glue from the label!
  • Wipe the oil off with paper to dry the bottle.
  • Write something on the bottle with a glue stick.
  • Pour the glitter over the areas written with glue.
  • Tap off the excess glitter and leave the glue to dry - done!

11. Build a magnificent champagne tower

This classic New year party idea will certainly wow your guests. Build the champagne tower as small or as large as you like, fill with sparkling wine and enjoy. Place the tower with the oysters and canapes so your guests can take something to nibble along side the wine. Learn how to build a champagne tower in our handy guide.

12. Something delicious for dessert

A last but by no means least you will need something to round off your New year celebration. What better way than to treat your guests to something creamy and sweet? Of course, no New year party would be complete without a dessert. This rich chocolate cheesecake in a glass from Swedish baking sensation Baka med Frida is a truly decadent dessert worthy of any New year celebration.
