Decorate the Christmas table with a Christmas cracker that you made yourself. Here is a step by step guide to making your own crackers for the Christmas table.

A Christmas cracker is a given on any Christmas table in the UK but making your own Christmas crackers really does add a more personal touch.

CHRISTMAS CRACKERS - A BRITISH TRADITION

As any Brit knows Christmas is hardly complete without a cracker on the table. Traditionally filled with a paper hat, a joke, and a small gift the wonderful thing about making your own Christmas crackers is that you can fill them with whatever you like or even personalise them to each guest!

HOW DO YOU MAKE A CHRISTMAS CRACKER?

You need:

  • Brown paper (or good quality Christmas wrapping paper)
  • Toilet roll
  • Optional string or ribbon
  • Scissors
  • Sprigs of pine and star anise for decoration
  • Candy or gift of your choice to put inside the cracker
  • Cracker tape, to make your crackers bang!
  • Glue

How to:

  1. Cut a piece of paper around 30 x 20 cm.
  2. Place a toilet roll in the middle of the paper and roll the paper around the toilet roll so that it is completely covered.
  3. At this point you can tape the paper shut if needed.
  4. Place your cracker tape inside the cracker and tie one of the ends shut using string or a piece of ribbon.
  5. Fill your cracker with a piece of candy and a gift, we used a paper tree decoration from DBKD but you really are only limited to the size of the cracker! Why not write your own jokes or a special note to each guest? Place everything inside the cracker and tie the other side shut making sure the cracker tape is still visible and held in place by the string.
  6. Finally, decorate your Christmas cracker with star anise and sprig of pine.
