WHAT DOES DANISH INTERIOR LOOK LIKE?

Danish interior isn’t always what you expect. Yes, natural lighting, untreated wood and open spaces are certainly part of it, but you might be surprised at the amount of colour, art and eclectic details you will find in a true Danish home.

Denmark, and in particular Copenhagen with its gastronomic experiences in the form of street food and exclusive modern restaurants, is a true Nordic gem and the perfect place to source inspiration for interior design.

IDEAS FOR A HOME INSPIRED BY DANISH INTERIOR

Not everything in your home needs to be an iconic design piece. In Denmark you often see a wild mix of affordable, second-hand pieces as well as unique quirky & classic designs all skilfully mixed to create an effortless, chic look. Make it your own!

Here are 5 tips to master the Danish interior look:

Mixed materials and a blend between classic and modern is key in Danish design.

1. Don't make it perfect

Danish interior isn’t about making it perfect. A true Danish home will seamlessly merge old, new, neutral and colourful. A perfectly arranged poster wall can certainly be part of a Danish home – but add an unexpected sculpture on the side table underneath it to mix it up and make it look effortless.

Don’t try to copy someone else’s home and don’t try to make it perfect. Danish homes are about functionality and personality. Keep that souvenir from that time you were backpacking for 3 months. Keep that odd pillow that doesn’t quite go with the rest of your home. It all adds to making the home you.

A combination of sculptures and other accessories are often a key component in Danish homes.

2. Make it functional

A core philosophy that has shaped Danish interior throughout history is functionality. Make your home liveable. Think about the space you have and the best way to use it. Let it take time and move things around until you’ve found the perfect mix for your lifestyle. Choose the things you want in your home wisely. Every item in your home should be intentional.

3. Go BOLD. Sometimes

Danish interior is a little braver than we would expect from its other Scandinavian neighbours. Whilst light wood is a staple material in all Scandinavian design, Danish interior might include a whole set of black-stained chairs around the dinner table. Or it might be a bright colour-blocking rug. Or why not one chair that doesn’t match the rest? Dare to go a little bolder in Danish interior, but don’t overdo it. A few very careful statement pieces will make your home unique, but not overpowering.

Vases and fresh flowers are often seen in Danish homes. The vases themselves are often statement pieces within themselves.

4. Use lamps as accent piece

If Danish design is known for being the best at one thing, it’s lamps. Some of the world’s most renowned lamp designs originate from this small 5-million inhabitant country. A Danish design lamp will add a Nordic touch to any interior and will last you for years to come. Many of the design lamps of the 50s and 60s are still in production today and are just as popular as they were back then.

Make sure your home is livable. It should be functional and cozy - not just nice to look at.

5. Add a little sprinkle of… “hygge”

We tried writing this piece for you without mentioning “Hygge”. It didn’t work. It’s just a fundamental part of Danish design and life. Make your home a little “hygge” with a cozy blanket, lots of candles and unique cups to enjoy a calming cup of tea from.
