What is a French press?

A French press, also known as a cafetiere, coffee press or coffee plunger, is a manual brewing method which consists of a plunger, beaker, filter and lid.

Our assortment includes some of the best cafetieres in a range of styles so you can find your favourite!

How to use a French press?

A French press coffee maker is simple to use and allow you to brew delicious coffee in a few easy steps:

  • Preheat your coffee press. This will stop your brewing temperature from fluctuating. You can simply add hot water to the coffee plunger and swirl it around until the coffee maker is warm. Throw out the water once the coffee press is warm to the touch.
  • Measure out your coffee and grind it. It is best to measure coffee with a scale rather than a spoon for the most accurate results.
  • Add the ground coffee and hot water. Once you have the correct measurements for your coffee grounds to the cafetiere and then the correct ratio of water. Give the coffee a quick stir to make sure the coffee has immersed into the water.
  • Start to time. Place the lid on the coffee beaker and start to time. The standard timing for coffee is around 4 minutes but you can adjust this to your personal preference.
  • Press the plunger. When the time is up, press slowly on the plunger until it reaches the bottom of the beaker.
  • Serve the coffee. Pour your freshly brewed coffee into your favourite mug and enjoy!

Coffee to water ratio for your French press

The French press coffee ratio can differ depending on your personal preference and the variations in the coffee beans and roasts. As a rule of thumb, you can use a 1:15 ratio of coffee to water.

What size coffee press should you choose?

When deciding which cafetiere you would like to buy, make sure to think about the size of the coffee press so it suits your needs.

A small cafetiere normally has the capacity for around 3-4 cups so it will be perfect for just you and maybe a friend or loved one.

A large cafetiere normally holds enough coffee for 8-12 cups which makes it an ideal option is you will be pouring for a larger crowd.

Brew your morning coffee in a pour-over coffee maker

A pour-over coffee maker is a good alternative to the regular coffee press and is relatively simple to use. It is an especially popular choice for single origin coffees as manually pouring the water accentuates the intricate flavours and aromas. First, the ground coffee is placed in a filter and on top of your coffee mug. After this, boiling water is poured over the coffee which is then slowly filtered through into the cup.
